Mermaids have attracted much attention across the centuries, from fantastical Greek mythology, powerful nautical superstitions, and even a beloved Disney princess. Their name stems from the joining of two Old English terms: mere (sea) – maid (lady), and are easily recognizable as humans with a fishtail. Mermaids were once commonly equated to Sirens, femme fatale figures that would lure sailors to shipwreck. But less sinister, they are closely associated with other marine animals, like turtles and dolphins, but especially manatees/dugongs.
