Here at the National Marine Life Center we are very excited about this year’s silent and live auction, which will feature a “spa-tacular package”, beautiful and unique furniture pieces, a Nantucket getaway for two, and much more! All the proceeds raised by the Mermaid Ball benefit the National Marine Life Center’s marine wildlife rehabilitation, science, and education programs.

One of our most unique pieces is a Antique Cane Seat Rocking Chair, which once belonged to a whaling captain’s home in New Bedford. Sophie, by Arnold Desmarais

Arnold Desmarais is a well-known artist best known for his evocative seascapes. Through lighting and color, his paintings reflect the ocean in all its moods. In one interview, the artist comments: “I enjoy the power of the ocean, its ever changing aspects, its elusive qualities of color and reflective light. It’s hard to capture, but I always love a challenge. Art is all about challenging yourself all the time.”

Now, Mr. Desmarais has donated an exclusive animal portrait to our upcoming Mermaid Ball. As “Sophie” the sea lion explores the ocean depths, her compelling expression invites you to join her while at the same time imploring you to help other animals in need.

On August 25th the National Marine Life Center will be presenting the 5th annual Mermaid Ball at the Willowbend Country Club in Mashpee, MA. Tickets are available on-line, over the phone by calling 508-743-9888, or in person by visiting 120 Main Street, Buzzards Bay. All proceeds from the $125 per person gala will benefit the National Marine Life Center’s marine wildlife rehabilitation, science, and education programs.

For those of you who have never attended a Mermaid Ball, it is one night a year that our guests can release their inner mermaids/mermen. We welcome mermaids, pirates, and sea creatures alike. However, if you’re not the costume type it is an excuse to breakout your best party dress or suit for this semi-formal event.

Currently, we are hard at work requesting and receiving donations for our silent and live auction. The silent and live auction features a weekend of activities in Boston, fine dining experiences, sporting and musical event tickets, mermaid themed gifts and much more. As for the entertainment that evening we are proud to present the GinaMark Band.
